Constructed Readings #ElifAşkın

Constructed Readings explores Crime and Punishment’s protagonist Raskolnikov’s exploration of Aksaray through mappings and collages.

Imagine Raskolnikov wandering the hustle of Aksaray. What could he have stolen from this neighborhood?

Who stole all this? Can a stolen city be recovered? Or is this city eating itself?

Come even closer and look inside. Enter the underground shops, see the battle of concrete and stone, the mossy floors of the spiritual places. Repeating cameras and satellite receivers… Could Raskolnikov have lived here? He used to wander the endless streets of Aksaray.

In addition to corpses above ground, corpses underground… Where do all these skins come from? Where are they going?

In the collage map of Aksaray, the most prominent problems and words stand out. The biggest one is immigration. Who knows how many people fell into the chaos of Aksaray?
Migrating people have lost their direction and much as if they had fallen from a flock of birds. This situation is a symbolic expression of Aksaray.
The mapping of the images was drawn axonometrically. The problems were emphasized with the speeches made in the street. The fact that the green areas consist only of the gardens of religious places, the apartments on the minus floors due to the rise of the street, the communal backyards are not used because of ventilation problems, the gaps formed due to urban transformation, the historical cities and lost neighborhoods that emerged with the excavation of the Marmaray, and Aksaray, which is constantly migrating and layered on has disappeared forms part of a city. Will Raskolnikov find himself in Aksaray’s own disappear.
